I saw Buffalo Springfield at the Whiskey-a-Go-Go in 1966. The headliners that weekend were the Animals. I was a senior in high school from Tucson. Snuck over to see then boyfriend who was in Basic at Camp Pendleton after getting drafted. I had never heard of them but have a perfect picture in my mind of them on stage. Blew us away!

Man that very first note sends shivers down my spine. The very first note says it all. What was that famous song about the Kent State student massacre? It was 1968 or 69 I went to a free Joan Baez concert in Palo Alto, and it started raining joints! I was sitting on the grass and One landed right next to me. That might have been the first time I got high. I thought my parents were pretty square, but they had Joan Baez's first album, I still remember the words to Silver Dagger. Has anybody heard that interview she did where she imitates her ex-boyfriend, Bob Dylan? Hilarious ❗ In seven words she spills the beans. He was such an ass, still is as far as I can tell.

This song was recorded well after Buffalo Springfield's first album was released, and was not originally included on first pressings. Stills had written the song, but not titled it, when he presented it at a rehearsal for his bandmates approval with the words "Tell me what you think of this, for what it's worth", or something along those lines. Their management recognized a hit when they heard one, and rushed it out on this single. The sub-title in parentheses (Stop, Hey What's That Sound) was included in an effort to help identify it to those who didn't recognize it from the adopted title. Of course, it instantly hit, so much so that they repressed the album, substituting "Baby Don't Scold Me" with this track. It so typified the west coast sound that was sweeping the nation at that time, that it became a bit of an anthem in some parts. The B-side is decent as well, though many would argue it's not quite up to the level of the plug side.

I had the pleasure of suggesting this band to a curious Central American gentleman who, in the past, enjoyed CSN and CCR.
